Merrick Garland has just been confirmed as Joseph Biden’s attorney general. This office and the Department of Justice has been a focal point of controversy in previous years. In particular, the tenures of Donald Trump’s attorney general’s Jeff Sessions and William Bar have raised critical issues on the proper relationship between the Department of Justice and the presidency. Doug Becker examines this relationship and the future of the role with Cornell Clayton.
Cornell Clayton is the C. O Johnson Distinguished Professor of Government at Washington State University. He is an expert in constitutional law and judicial politics and is the author of The Politics of Justice: Attorney General and the Making of Government Legal Policy.
