New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has declared a climate change emergency in New Zealand. This declaration is non-binding, but Ardern says the motion intends to hold the Government accountable and recognises that they are taking the issue seriously. Jess Hopkins spoke with Julie MacArthur about the declaration and what are the key environmental policy issues New Zealand is facing.
Julie MacArthur is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Auckland. She specialises in environmental politics and policy, particularly in renewable energy policies. She has been published in the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences and is the author of Empowering Electricity: Co-operatives, Sustainability, and Power Sector Reform in Canada (Sustainability and the Environment).
