In this history masterclass series, three historians – Paul Taillon, Malcolm Campbell, and Linda Bryder – come together from different specialist areas in the history discipline to address the role of populism as a historical force.

In this series, you will hear about populism in American, Australian and New Zealand history.

In this episode, Linda Bryder talks about New Zealand’s first populist government, the Liberal Government, which served from 1891 to 1912. To date, it is the longest-serving government in New Zealand history.

Linda Bryder is a Professor in History at the University of Auckland. She is an expert in New Zealand social and cultural history and is the author of A Voice for Mothers: The Plunket Society and Infant Welfare 1907–2000.
